Easy question. I'd pick deaf over blind in a heartbeat. There are several reasons why: 1) I'm kind of messy and I'd trip over all the stuff on my floor if I couldn't see anything. 2) I'm a visually oriented person. The world to me consists of stuff you can see. Everything else is just a filler 3) Unlike many hearing people I'm not that interested in music. I've never been to a concert and don't like the opera. 4) I'm a sign language junkie so being blind would be kind of a bummer. 5) Going to the grocery store would be such a hassle. Not to mention the cooking...
The list could go on, but I'll stop there. Before closing, I just want to congratulate everyone for getting rid of JKF. It'll be interesting to see what happens next.
You know, I remember someone asking me this question when I was a kid, and it totally took me aback, because the person asked the question as if either condition was too horrible to contemplate (I don't think she fully understood that I was deaf or the extent of it). There's never been any contest for me anyway. I'd hate like hell to lose my vision.
While I can hear enough with HA to appreciate music and such, it wouldn't bother me to lose all of it completely. (I'd really have to step up learning ASL, though :) )
To be fair, I admit if I had been born without sight, I'd probably feel the same as I do about being deaf.
I've been asked this question all of my life. I always pick "deaf", I guess because actually I don't have a choice!
I have always wondered why the blind get all of the bonus's -- like an extra tax extemption, and support of major clubs like The Elks. 'Seems like the blind invoke alot more compassion in everyone and I have never understood why. At least when you are blind, you can COMMUNICATE. The deaf actually have a double handicap.
'Take a beauty shop for example. There is a blind woman here in town with a dog and when she comes into the shop everyone bows and scrapes and makes sure she is comfortable. And ME? I am sitting there being ignored while everyone else is laughing and having a good time.
I am love to being deaf, I feel fortunately to being deaf myself. Because I can sleep without heard of annoyances; dog barking; outside by traffic; or anything else.
I think that deaf is best disability ever! :) Although, I bet that Blind is worst disability ever. I feel sorry for blind people. :(

blind is the most scary when you suddenly become.
ReplyDeleteI would choice deaf, it would be not much freak out. I have seen several shows (and movies) that when someone turn blind, they have bigger heartbreak.
