Deaf Priests Vs. Castle Hills, Texas

Yesterday, a group of deaf priests successfully won a fight with the city hall in acquiring the permit to run a seminary. The residents of Castle Hills protested the seminary out of fear that it may open up the door to group homes and fraternities.

The seminary will be on an 8,100 square-foot-house. I think I can understand why some may be concerned about the idea of fraternities being allowed after this. However, I think it’s a little silly to be against group homes. Sometimes, the journalists can twist their words around to make them appear cold-hearted. I don't know if this is how they really feel. I certainly hope not. Below is an excerpt from the article.

"I hope that you are happy to live in a city that you are slowly destroying," said Councilman Tom Davis, who voted to approve the permit.

That was directed toward Rev. Tom Coughlin, the person who won the fight to obtain a special use permit for the seminary. Quite a heartwarming gesture, eh?

According to the article, the attorney found a legal loophole in relation to the uses of religious lands. That is how they won the special use permit. I don't see what the residents of Castle Hills have to worry about.

Congratulations to the group of deaf priests for the victory.

  1. I chuckled at the part of the statement about group homes and fraternities... fraternities? I can't imagine Catholic seminaries having fraternities, reeking of beer and girls, huh?

But kudos to Tom Coughlin... I know him from Rochester, NY when he lived there.

  3. Oh, my...what did they think the word "seminary" meant? A college? Or was it prejudice against Catholics, priests, or adult men living together? Amazing...

Go, Tom! Knew you when we were 11 year old kids at RSD and we had such grand ambitions!

  4. good heavens! :-) I'd like to assure the folks of Castle Hills, TX, they have absolutely nothing to worry about. This group of deaf Catholic priests lived in the All Saints Church right here in Hayward, my current hometown, for years. There weren't any problems at all. Tom Coughlin is well respected and you're lucky to have him for a neighbor.

  5. This Catholic Deaf Seminary, is it being sanctioned by the Catholic Church and the Vatican?

Noticed there was no mention about this.

  6. Anonymous #3, please do not post any criminal allegations.

The reason why I cannot allow any of these allegations be posted onto my blog is due to liability issues.

    I hope you understand.

  7. I found these comments now, so, I am replying to you all delay.

Hi Karen, we asked special permit for increasing the number of seminarians in our house. We did not ask the permit of fraternities or group homes. We asked Castle Hills for only increase the number of seminarians.
Hi Dianrez, Seminary is a place where men are studying to become priests or brothers. But, our house is a house where men are living together such as praying, eating, talking and studying together.
Hi Anonymous, This Catholic deaf ministry is sanctioned and approved by the Catholic Church and the Vatican.

    Thank you.

    With love & prayers,
    Br. Joseph Thermadom OP Miss

  8. I've known Father Tom Coughlin for over 30 years and he is fulfilling a dream and assisting Deaf men to help others as ministers in their church. What a blessing to any neighborhood! Keep up the good work Tom.
