Beyond Silence

In this vlog entry, I make a movie recommendation. It's a foreign movie involving deaf characters. I share my opinion on the movie and why I think the deaf people need to see it. The vlog entry is approximately four minutes long.

  1. Beyond Silence was a very good movie. It made me cry. But I felt that it generalizes Deaf community that we hate music or are angry with hearing people for able to hear music. I love to feel music. I had been a dancer since I was 4 years old. I am very Deaf but I love to feel music. I go to the bands/concerts six times a year.

Banjo, I am impressed with how you design your introduction in video. Good job. :o)

I wanted to ask you about something that I hope you don't mind. I noticed on the top that said Deafness. Did you realize that Deafness is a medical term and focus on the broken ears? Can you explain to me what "Deafness" means to you?

Keep up with good work.. Smile

  2. Thanks, I'll pick it up - though, I don't relate to them.

I do NOT rely on my hearing children OR my husband for interpreting.

My husband refuses! Good for him - hearing people get frustrated with him and my children also REFUSES.

Good for them, too! I trained them well!

There are times when I'd pull on them, "Would you call pizza for me ?"

"Aw, mom - no, I don't want to! Use VP! That's what it is for!"

The only times it would work is if I play "sick" - which is rare, by the way. ;)

But they do stand up for themselves, and I hope that they do not have any issues with me in the future – as far as my being their deaf mother.

And I agree with Aidan, there are many deaf music lovers who love vibrations and rock out!

I just got pissed at some ignorant hearing people in the Pearl Jam community when some were mocking at interpreters at the show. “What for?” Oohh.. my blood boiled!!

I threw a big hiss fit at them - telling them that vibrations do not belong ONLY to hearing people!

Anyway...I encourage my children to play music all the time.

I absolutely love feeling them playing when I'm taking a nap - it's a wonderful feeling!

But I'm sure it's a good release for those CODAs of old days where technology didn't exist for the deaf people to be independent, or for those today's deaf parents to realize the impaction of their hearing children’s lives if they demand their children's assistance or in some cases, asks them but that still puts their children in awkward position.

Thanks for bringing it up and I'll look for that movie!

Aidan - I gotta take you to a Pearl Jam show with me! We'll rock out together! They're gonna tour this year... ahh, I'd love to have deafies with me!! :D

    Uh...Banjo, you may join.

Heck, all of your commenters are welcome... :)

  4. "You are so Vain about yourself. Jeez.."

You know, you may want to leave your name next time. Cowardice isn't a characteristic trait to take in great stride. One is only vain s/he one choose to discuss nothing but him/herself as if the world revolves around him/her. If you're talking about the pictures, then you are quite a nitpicker.

Anyway, Aidan and IAmMine, appreciate both of your comments. Both of you share some quite valid points.

Aidan, you are right, people may get the idea that deaf people in general hate music by watching this movie. Though when it come to movies, people must remember that it's just a movie. However, movies can make a big impact on how one may see us.

Still, I do have to say that I know a number of deaf people who don't care for music like the father in the movie but maybe not with the amount of hatred he had. A lot of deaf friends of mine enjoy music.

Yes, I'm aware of the word, 'Deafness' being a medical term. However, I don't view it as a negative term. It's a term I use without having to use sub-titles for different categories like Deaf, deaf, Hard of Hearing, Cochlear Implantees, etc. More like lumping all related subjects to one section of my blog is what it is. It's not a way of telling you or myself that we are disabled, just more of an identity if you ask me.

Can't hurt to turn a word that may be perceived to be negative into something positive.

If you have any better names to use, you can always share them here. :-)

  5. Dear "Anonymous", there is a big difference between vanity and feeling good about oneself. Banjo was raised by a wonderful, understanding family, they ALL sign to some degree and he has done well because of strong familial support. He is extremely talented, as I am sure you have noticed. I have never, ever known him to sign himself as "anonymous", because he does not need to.

I fully intend to see the movie that Banjo reviews in this latest vlog. We all appreciate his movie reviews, he saves us from going to see alot of duds!

  7. Yes this was when I watched the movie before I had children. It was a very heartwarming movie. The father's anger was very intense, I still can remember that scene when he became so angry with his daughter and the division they caused between themselves.

I don't discourage my kids from music because they have the right to be HEARING as just like we have the right to be DEAF! They have ipod, portable stereo, radio and many more music stuff around here.

I've heard that many koda/coda children tend to have a very good ear in music which is good. But it makes us feel left out at times when they are listening to music but we cannot take this away from them. If my kids are at the age that they want to go to a rock concert or whatever, I would be sure to go, I would love to go and feel the vibrations, who cares!

  8. Aidan,

"Banjo, I am impressed with how you design your introduction in video. Good job. :o)"

Even though I am capable of making some nice-looking transitions/effects, but I'll like to make it known that the effect used in the opening wasn't mine. It's an effect developed by Apple that can be found in iMovie.

Just a way of saving time. :-)

  11. Sam, thanks a lot... that bugged me, too!

I was supposed to study...but darn, I had to do some digging on the internet! ;)

That would be Mare Winningham playing in the "Love Is Never Silent".

I remember that movie, too... oh geez, I felt horrible in that part where she was forced to interpet when shopping for a casket.

I was young when I saw that...now I feel soooooo old.

    Thanks...I think.... ;)

  12. Sam,

  13. yes. Thank you. I find the describle match what I have seen it when I was such a child. Not able to understand everything but most pictures in my mind, I have. I would love to watch again which title I would able to find. However, the problem, it seem that there is DVD available only in UK, none else as I doubt it wouldn't work on US DVD region.

  14. Banjo,

I have yet to see the movie, but it would be an interesting perspective. I have seen sound and fury, would like to see sound and fury II.

What is more interesting is the support roles that "deafies" play, but often not by real deaf actors. She's all that, Babel, (I know there are more, but I am drawing a blank). A movie I want to see is the struggle of a HoH coming to terms with their identity with a group of diverse friends, be them deaf or hearing. Kind of a Separate Peace novel...

PS. Vanity? Nah, it's called a vlog, and you are brave for showing your face online and talking about issues that bring up critical points... I'd never be able to do that.
